Naka Ima 10th Anniversary Special Seminar

On April 5 - 6, 2014, Naka Ima is holding a special seminar to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The seminar will be led by Sensei Greg Angus and friends of the dojo, and it is open to all Aikido students. There will be no charge to attend the seminar.

CANCELLED: Endo Shihan in Toronto - April 4-6, 2014

Unfortunately, due to personal health reasons, Naka Ima not be hosting a seminar with Endo Shihan in Toronto on April 4-6, 2014.

2013 Holiday Schedule

There will be no Aikido classes at Naka Ima on December 24 and January 1. Kids Aikido classes are also cancelled on December 24 and 26th, but regular adult classes will be held on December 24 and December 31, 2013.

Naka Ima is moving to Oakwood-Vaughan neighborhood in Toronto

Effective May 1, 2013, Naka Ima Aikido is moving to its new location at 473 Oakwood Ave., 2nd Floor, Toronto, Ontario M6E 2W4 .

This location is in the Oakwood-Vaughan neighbourhood (also known as Oakwood Village) in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Naka Ima Kids Winter Camp: Aikido and Art Classes (Jan 2-4, 2013)

Naka Ima is holding a three-day Aikido and Art Class Winter Day Camp in the GTA for children between 4 and 12 years old.

Running from January 2-4, 2013, the Naka Ima winter camp includes fitness, martial arts, painting, clay work and and sculpture activities.

Aikido Seminar with Hiraoki Izumi Sensei, August 4-5, 2012

Hiroaki Izumi Sensei (aka Rocky) is coming! This in-depth, principles-oriented aikido seminar is happening August 4-5, 2012 in Toronto at Naka Ima.

Izumi Sensei (6th dan) is Canadian and was Shidoin for Y. Kawahara Shihan. He has studied aikido for 35 years under Shihan such as Tohei Akira Shihan, Kawahara Yukio Shihan, Ichihashi Norihiko Shihan and Cottier Ken Shihan. He is technical director of an association of dojo around the world under the name Jin Yu Gi Aikido. He regularly teaches at the Gulf University for Science & Technology Aikido Dojo (Kuwait).

Free Aikido and Aikifit classes, May 14-31, 2012

On May 12th to May 31st, Naka Ima is offering free Aikido martial arts classes at our new location in Toronto. All kids and adult Aikido martial art classes are free and open to the public during this period. View our Aikido class schedule and reserve your free class today.

Aikido Children's Class Wolf and Cub Day, May 12

On Saturday, May 12th, Naka Ima is holding its first Wolf and Cub class during the Aikido children's martial arts class at 10am. The class is a chance for our children's class members to bring a parent, relative or friend to the dojo and share what they have been learning. This class is open to all adult members as well.

Yoga and Fitness Classes now available at Naka Ima Movement Arts

As part of our move to the new location at Dufferin/St. Clair, we have partnered with long time friends to form Naka Ima Movement Arts. We have 3,000 square feet of space helping students attune themselves to be more present, responsive and open.

Naka Ima Movement Arts is also home to Aikifit (a martial arts conditioning and circuit training program), and On Yoga (offering Iyengar, Hatha, Ashtanga Vinyasa/Flow, Restorative). Please visit www.aikifit.com and www.onyoga.net for more information.

We have added three new classes to our Aikido class schedule:

Friday evenings from 7:00 - 8:00 pm
Tuesday mornings from 8:00 - 9:00 am
Thursday mornings from 8:00 - 9:00 am

Naka Ima dojo moving to 1643 Dufferin St.

Effective April 9, 2012, the Naka Ima dojo is moving to its new location at 1643 Dufferin St., Toronto, Ontario, M6H 3L9. This is on south east corner of Dufferin and St. Clair just a few doors down.

Special Class with Henry Kono Sensei, April 29, 2012

There will be a special Aikido class with Henry Kono Sensei on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 11 am.

Henry Kono Sensei studied Aikido in the 1960s with O’Sensei at Hombu Dojo. He has been teaching his unique perspective on the art ever since, and conducts yearly seminars in Ireland, the Netherlands, Texas, Florida, Vermont and Virginia.

This special class will be held at Naka Ima's new location (Dufferin/St. Clair), and a $10 mat fee applies.

Aikido Seminar with Harvey Konigsberg Shihan, Feb 25-26, 2012

Naka Ima will again be hosting an Aikido seminar with Harvey Konigsberg Shihan in Toronto on February 25-26, 2012.

Harvey Konigsberg Sensei is a 7th degree black belt in Aikido and the chief instructor at Woodstock Aikido. In addition to teaching in Woodstock, he also instructs at the New York Aikikai in Manhattan, and has conducted seminars in Europe, Russia, Israel. South America, Mexico, Canada and the United States as well as the Caribbean.

Holiday Break Children’s Aikido Classes

Naka Ima is holding daily children’s Aikido classes at the dojo during the school holiday break, from December 26th – January 6th, Monday to Friday at 1-3pm. Any child between the ages of 5 to 12 years old are welcome attend the special children's Aikido classes for free.

Tuesday Weapons Classes Added

Starting December 6th, Naka Ima will be offering weapons classes on Tuesday evenings at 7:00-8:30pm. Training with the jo and bokken will improve your timing and understanding of empty handed techniques. Aikido weapons training is a great way to enhance your aikido practice. We recommend all members take advantage of this opportunity.

Aikido Basics Week: Free Martial Arts Classes (Sept 26 - Oct 1, 2011)

Naka Ima is holding an Aikido Basics Week from Monday, September 26 to Saturday, October 1, 2011. During this week, all kids and adult Aikido classes are free and open to the public. Each class will focus on an aspect of Aikido, such as basic Aikido history and terminology, basic Aikido techniques, basic self-defense & awareness, and basic rolling and falling.

Special Introduction Class, Saturday May 14, 2011

Naka Ima is hosting a special introductory Aikido class for children and adults on Saturday, May 14,, 2011.

The children’s introductory class will take place from 10:00 – 10:50 am, while the adults’ introductory class will take place from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.

The free introductory Aikido classes will be held at its martial arts dojo in the Liberty Market Building, Liberty Village in Toronto.

Intro to AikiFit Fitness Program, Saturday, April 23, 2011

Naka Ima is launching a new fitness program called AikiFit aimed at anyone who wants to be fitter, faster, and healthier. AikiFit, a new fitness training system developed by Jesse Brown, consists of interval training across different fun challenging stations to improve stamina, increase flexibility and reduce the risk of injury.

Japan Benefit Seminar in Montreal, April 1-3, 2011

In place of the cancelled seminar this weekend with Endo Shihan, Shoshin Aikido in Montreal is hosting a benefit Aikido seminar on April 1-3, 2011 with Naka Ima's Greg Angus Sensei leading some of the sessions. All profits will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross. The seminar will be held at the Shoshin Aikido of Montreal dojo: 5445 Ave. De Gaspe #208, Montreal QC. Endo Sensei Seminar in Toronto: April 1-3, 2011 (cancelled)

Naka Ima is once again hosting our annual seminar with Endo Shihan in Toronto on April 1-3, 2011. The session on Friday will be held at Naka Ima's dojo (at Liberty Village, Toronto), while the Saturday and Sunday session will be held at an event space nearby (99sudbury.ca).

Ross Robertson Sensei Seminar in Toronto: December 4-5, 2010

Naka Ima is hosting a seminar with Ross Robertson Sensei on December 4-5, 2010. Robertson Sensei, 5th Dan, is the founder of Still Point Aikido in Austin, Texas.

Robertson Sensei's style is known to be elegant, economical and very flowing. His lineage and ranking comes through Rod Kobayashi Sensei's Seidokan Aikido which was an off-shoot of the Ki Society many years ago.

Karate Free Intro Seminar, Saturday, October 9, 2010

Naka Ima is hosting an intro seminar to Shito Ryu Karate on Saturday, October 9 from 1:30 - 2:30 pm. This free seminar is for adults and open to the general public, with or without martial arts experience.

Shito Ryu Seiko Kai Karate Do classes are offered at Naka Ima every Tuesday evening at 6 - 7 pm and Friday evening at 7 - 9 pm.

The ROOTS of CONTACT: Aikido + Contact Improv Dance

David Jurasek, Naka Ima’s morning classes instructor, is co-facilitating an Aikido + Contact Improv Dance Workshop on September 25 from 3:00pm - 6:30pm at Naka Ima.

During this workshop, participants will investigate and explore:
* Aikido kata (form) with partners to clarify and apply the dynamic and subtle principles of focusing, centering, grounding, softening, and staying connected.
* The Contact Improv dynamics of centering/falling and resisting/releasing.
* The intersection and integration of Aikido and Contact, in principle and practice.

The workshop fee is $30 if you register before September 4 ($40 at door). This workshop is limited to 30 people so register early.

Karate Classes at Naka Ima

Naka Ima is now offering Shito Ryu Karate classes every Tuesday evening at 6 - 7 pm and Friday evening at 7 - 9 pm.

Karate Do means "way of the empty hand". The meaning of "empty hand" is twofold, it refers to fighting without a weapon, but also means practising with a clear, calm mind. Our classes emphasize finding harmony in one's movements and developing inner peace and focus.

Special Friday Ukemi Classes, March 12 to April 2, 2011

Learning to be a good uke and to properly and safely receive a technique is an important aspect of the Aikido martial art practice. With this in mind, Sensei Ramin will be holding special ukemi classes for four consecutive Fridays starting March 12th until April 2nd from 7:00 – 8:00 pm.

The ukemi classes are open to all Naka Ima Aikido members, including total beginners as well as our more experienced students.

Qigong Classes in Liberty Village

Starting November 25, 2009, Qigong classes will be offered at Naka Ima every Wednesday evening at 5:45 pm - 6:45 pm.

Qigong is the art of balancing and increasing your vital internal energy (Qi) through slow standing meditative movements, deep breathing, and stretching the muscle of imagination. Benefits of Qigong practice includes reducing stress, boosting the immune system, increased self-awareness, tranquility, and harmony with nature.

Class fees are $12 with proceeds from Qigong classes going towards The Ride to Conquer Cancer 2010.

Kangeiko at Naka Ima, February 22nd to February 28th

Kangeiko is a traditional winter practice that deepens your Aikido, strengthens your body and purifies your spirit. This year, Naka Ima is holding Kangeiko from February 22 to 28, 2010. To participate in Kangeiko, Naka Ima members must attend at least one class each day for seven consecutive days.

During Kangeiko, the current regular class schedule will be supplemented with additional classes on Tuesday and Friday from 7:00 – 8:00 pm and Sunday from 1:00 –2:00 pm.

Morning Aikido classes now at Liberty Village

Naka Ima has added two morning Aikido classes at its new location in Liberty Village on the following days:

* Mondays from 7:00 to 8:00 am
* Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 am

Naka Ima grand opening seminar on July 3-5, 2009

Naka Ima will be hosting Matti Jonesuu at our grand opening seminar on July 3, 4 and 5.

Matti Jonesuu, 6th dan, is a long-time student of Endo Sensei and Greg Sensei’s sempai (and good friend). Matti Sensei has a long history of presenting highly-regarded seminars in Europe and Scandanavia. Some of you may remember Matti, as he has attended Endo Sensei’s seminar in Toronto in the past. The seminar will be held at our new dojo.

Naka Ima has moved to Liberty Village

After five years at our location in Etobicoke, Naka Ima has moved to Liberty Village. The new location is at the Liberty Market Building, 171 East Liberty Street, Unit #116 (south of King Street between Dufferin and Strachan).

He has been a devoted student of both Akira Tohei Shihan in Chicago and Mitsunari Kanai Shihan in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
